Observe fishing boats coming ashore and dine on fresh seafood in a waterside restaurant at this picturesque harbor.
Portree Harbour is a sheltered, calm space lined by rows of pastel-colored storefronts and fringed by gentle green hills. Embark on boat trips to nearby islands from the pier and enjoy fresh seafood dishes at one of the family-owned establishments lining the harbor.
Stroll from the town center down to the harbor area. With the bobbing boats moored out on the blue waters, the green hills on either side framing them and the pink, yellow and blue-painted façades inland, the harbor area is one of the most photogenic spots in town.
Book a boat tour from the harbor. Take excursions out on the Raasay Sound or even out to the neighboring islands of Rona and Raasay. Admire the dramatic coastal sea cliffs and look for magnificent marine wildlife such as seals, dolphins and whales. Among the most impressive species present here is the rare sea eagle, which is identifiable by its conspicuous white tail.
Purchase takeout fish and chips and eat them down by the harbor. The sight of the traditional boats coming and going from the harbor combined with the sound of the water gently sloshing at the shore has a relaxing effect. Be alert for the seagulls circling overhead. These fearless birds may be tempted to steal some of your food should you put it down.
If you would rather eat indoors, head for one of the charming harbor-front restaurants. Book a window table to coincide with sunset for the finest views. Fresh shellfish, such as mussels and scampi, as well as typical Scottish dishes such as Cullen skink, a thick and hearty soup made with smoked haddock and potatoes, tend to dominate the menus.
Limited parking is available at Portree Harbour, but the best way to get here is on foot. If you are coming from Somerled Square in the center of town, the walk is downhill and will only take about 5 minutes. Portree’s main thoroughfare, Bank Street, runs parallel to the back of the harbor. During summer, the harbor is lively and atmospheric. Come during winter when the hills surrounding the harbor are coated in a dusting of snow.
