If you’re preparing to watch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and hoping to see more fantastic fashion like in the first Knives Out movie, you’re in for a treat.

If you’re still pining after a cozy cable-knit sweater like Chris Evans’ character Ransom Drysdale wore in the first movie, you are also in luck! You can totally buy or DIY your own cozy sweater and accessories. Here are a few DIY options listed from beginner to expert-level yarn skills.

Beginner

Finger knit ear warmer headband tutorial

You don’t need any fancy knitting or crochet tools for this ear warmer headband. All you need is your fingers! Well, you’ll also need yarn. You’ll only need one ball of yarn for this, and it may give you enough to make a few of these ear warmers - perfect for gifting!

I recommend purchasing yarn from a local yarn shop or ordering it online rather than going to a big box hobby store where most of the yarn will be acrylic (in other words, plastic), which won’t be as warm or as soft as wool. Shopping for yarn can be overwhelming when you realize there are hundreds of different combinations of yarn weights and materials out there. When you find a pattern you like, you may see that the pattern-writer often makes a suggestion for these things, so don’t feel like you’ll have to know everything about yarn before starting this project.

For something that’s right next to your face, I would probably go for a soft wool like merino or alpaca. “Superwash” means it’s machine-washable, too, which can be a plus. Just make sure to follow care instructions that may come with your yarn.

Beginner (option 2)

Spruce Craft's easy crochet starter guideYou can also try this crocheted headband with a handy video tutorial. You’ll need worsted or chunky/bulky weight yarn and a 5mm crochet hook. Now, I say it is for a beginner, but you will also need to be familiar with some basic crochet terms. Check out Spruce Craft’s easy crochet starter guide.

Intermediate

Feel like you’re starting to master some of the knitting lingo (purl, knit, skpo, p2tog, etc.)? This hat pattern is a great confidence-booster and is easy to master on straight needles. There’s even a video with Ann (Crazy Hands blogger) showing you how to knit this hat step-by-step.

To make the hat, you’ll need two 5mm straight needles and your favorite bulky-weight yarn (see above for suggestions). After you knit this hat on straight needles, you will just sew the two sides together with a mattress stitch, so be sure to refresh yourself on that before you start. I always appreciate Very Pink Knits’ YouTube tutorials in slow motion.

This pattern is a great introduction into cable knitting, and you’ll need a cable needle or an extra needle on which you keep your cable stitches. Sometimes I just use an extra double-pointed needle, but a true cable needle gives me more confidence that I won’t accidentally drop those stitches.

You will also need a tapestry needle to weave in your ends and to do the mattress stitch when you’re finished. Be sure to have a backup or two just in case, or get yourself some colorful ones that aren’t as likely to get lost!

Intermediate (option 2)

Tonidale HatThis pattern requires the use of both circular needles (US size 5 3.75mm and US size 7 4.5mm) and double-pointed needles (US size 7 4.5mm), as well as a cable needle. It’s probably alright to use either the 16 inch or 24 inch circular needles for this project.

This pattern also uses worsted weight yarn rather than bulky. I would bet DK or aran weight yarns would work fine, as well, but be sure to check your gauge, as you may have to adjust the pattern by a few stitches so it’s not too loose or too tight.

Intermediate (option 3)

A good option for intermediate-level crochet is this free crochet cable hat pattern. You will need a 5.5mm crochet hook and 250 yards of worsted weight yarn for this project.

Expert

Thankfully, eagle-eyed knitters eagerly jumped on the Knives Out sweater pattern and provided a number of great options that look just like the one Chris Evans wears in the movie. You can download a pattern from Ravelry user Caryn S. for free or check out Lion Brand’s suggestions.

For Caryn S.’s free sweater recipe, you’ll need to know how to knit in the round, cable knit, construct a garment, and follow a pattern chart. You can use US size 5 and 7 (3.75mm and 4.5mm, respectively) straight or circular needles for the body, but you’ll definitely need those circular needles for the collar. You’ll also need a cable needle and plenty of stitch markers, as well as a round marker.

This pattern also uses worsted weight yarn, and thankfully there are no color changes (unless that’s your thing!). You will need more than 2,500 yards of yarn, so stock up on your favorite so you don’t have to pause your work while you wait for more to arrive in the mail - something which I will admit I am guilty of doing.

Buy it!

Not ready to DIY your own cabled garment? No worries! There are plenty of wonderfully cozy cabled options to buy ready-made to keep you warm this winter while you watch the newest Knives Out movie when it comes out on Netflix in December.
